Hi SCS! Agree disagree here. Yes, $/pupil is not the best nubemr to use, but it is one of the few direct comparisons a district has. If this were all we were using, I''d boo us, too but it''s meant to be just a snapshot. I think it''s fair to say districts with a very high cost per pupil have lots of opportunity for efficiencies. On the other hand, simply having a below average cost is NOT enough to say you are efficient and that''s not the intent with using this stat. Instead, it''s an invitation to come learn more about WHY we are lower in spending, and to hear what we''ve done to use our money wisely while actually improving our results. As far as a survey, agree disagree here as well. The typical community survey run by school districts, as well as the surveys run in relation to levies, are worthless IMO. However, it is important for a district to understand what the community is thinking, and a quantitative survey is one of the best ways to do that.I''d actually been pushing for a survey in Milford for a couple years, and we finally just ran one. However, we did NOT do the typical survey with the standard company(ies). We used a solid market researcher and the data we receive will be very valuable in helping us understand community perceptions and make decisions. In addition, it was less expensive than it would have been through other channels. You''re right as in most things, knowledge is key. I invite anyone, Milford resident or not, to come to our work session, community meeting, and to tune in to our financial webinar. You''ll get some of the information (can''t get all in limited time, of course) enough to be able to ask questions, which we will then gladly answer.

I do understand agree with what you''re sanyig, SCS, but the COS stuff is way too complicated for the majority of people. For those who want to dive in, sure, it''s a better resource but for the average person, it''s hard enough to understand the nuances of $/student. Any type of evaluation is going to be flawed b/c of factors districts cannot control. Truly the best comparison is internal: where we were, and where we are now. Then you can take individual aspects of other districts to compare learn. I''ll be happy to share the results of the survey and the reco''s from the consultant. It of course can''t cover everything we''d like to know, or else people wouldn''t participate , but it''s going to give us a solid look at some questions we need answers to right now.
